Mural: Wall of Children
Created: Summer 2023
Location:
This impactful mural was designed by world-renowned artist, Roy Henry Vickers (Haida, Heiltsuk, Ts’msyen and European). Vickers created the design in the wake of the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools across Canada. The design was created to acknowledge the children who died and were buried with no ceremony.
The powerful mural acknowledges the deaths of Indigenous peoples due to Canada’s colonial policies and dark legacy of Residential Schools. The mural is a tribute to the healing that is possible. The mural was painted under the direction of Vickers with many local people invited to help to paint the mural. Vickers’ father was of Haida, Heiltsuk, and Tsimshian background and his mother was of European descent. He lives on the banks of the Skeena River near Hazelton, BC.
