Wolf Moon Mural by Leah Pipe
Leah Pipe Artist Bio

Mural: Wolf Moon

Created:  2020

Size: 475 ft2

Location: East side of IG Wealth Management building

Address: 4644 Lazelle Avenue

The first full moon in January is often called the Wolf Moon. It’s believed that wolves howl the most during this month due to the shortage of winter food. The Wolf Moon signifies a time for each of us to take stick of the good things in our lives, reflect on our accomplishments and to let go of that which is negative. Ravens and wolves help each other during the harsh winter months: raves alert wolves to carrion (fallen animals) and the wolves gratefully open up the hides to feed. After the wolves replenish themselves, the ravens feast on sinew and bone marrow. The ravens’ beaks are often not strong enough to break through the hides themselves and this mural approach allows them both to survive the winter.

Designed by Leah Pipe and painted by Leah Pipe, Adell Herrigan, Lorraine Hnindan-Kendal, Kate Storring, Todd Taylor, Harold Fedderson. The northwest formline, seen in the woman, was created and painted by the amazing artists, Michelle Stoney (Gitxsan).

For 20 years, Leah Pipe has lived in the coastal mountain ranges of northern BC :: in a small town called Hazelton. Her community is located in the heart of Gitxsan territory with an incredible river running through it, the Skeena River. She works as a professional artist + graphic designer - she's the fourth generation of Pipes to live in Hazelton.  Leah has the Heart of a Raven - creative, curious and drawn to beauty. Her work is both simple and detailed :: capturing natural elements and portraying them in a striking, yet minimalistic layout. She aims to force her viewers to truly examine the micro-amazing details of a feather, a raven's beak, snow-capped mountains, salmon tails and the shapes of wolves' ears. It's the small details found in nature that inspire Pipe to share her art with others.
